NRS Walk Safe

The NRS Walk Safe is an indoor walking frame designed to provide more stable turning and more controlled movement around the home. Unlike standard walking frames that often need to be lifted to change direction, the Walk Safe stays in contact with the floor as you turn, helping movement feel smoother and more secure.

Co-developed with the University of Salford, it combines swivel front castors, Magnetic Directional Bias, a rear glide and pressure brake, and lower support handles to support safer, more practical everyday use indoors.

Features

  • Proven twice as stable when turning as a standard walking frame
  • Swivel castors with Magnetic Directional Bias for smoother turning and better straight-line control
  • Combined rear glide and pressure brake for smooth movement and controlled stopping
  • Lower support handles to assist with sitting down and standing up
  • Adjustable height and width to suit a wide range of users
  • Available in medium and large sizes
  • Fully welded lightweight frame
  • Cushioned upper handles
  • Frame splits into two pieces for storage or transport
  • 2-year warranty

Why Walk Safe Is Different

Traditional walking frames are stable in a straight line, but often become less stable when turning because they need to be lifted. That stop-start movement can make turning feel awkward and less secure, especially in tighter indoor spaces or when moving over thresholds such as carpet.

The Walk Safe was designed to address that problem. Its front castors allow the frame to turn while remaining in contact with the floor. After the turn, Magnetic Directional Bias helps the wheels return to a forward-facing position for more controlled straight-line walking. At the rear, the combined glide and pressure brake helps the frame move smoothly over indoor surfaces and provides a controlled stop when downward pressure is applied.

Clinical testing showed over a 40% increase in average stability margin, with the minimum stability margin more than doubling during turning.

Support for Sitting and Standing

The Walk Safe includes lower support handles built into the frame to provide extra support when standing up from, or sitting down into, a chair, sofa, or bed. Positioned lower than the main hand grips, they are easier to reach from a seated height and are designed to support safer transfers in the home.

Cushioned upper handles provide comfort during day-to-day use, while the fully welded frame gives a more solid and durable feel than a conventional folding walking frame.

Who It’s For

The Walk Safe is designed for people who use a walking frame indoors and want more support when turning. It may suit users who find standard frames difficult to lift to change direction, who want smoother movement between rooms, or who need additional support when standing and sitting.

With adjustable height and width, and medium and large size options, the Walk Safe is designed to suit a wide range of users. As with any mobility aid, correct sizing and suitability should be checked carefully, and healthcare professional guidance may be helpful where needed.

Clinical Background

The Walk Safe was developed with the University of Salford as part of research into safer mobility support. Testing found it was twice as stable when turning as a standard walking frame, with more than a 40% increase in average stability margin and the minimum stability margin more than doubled.

These findings support the product’s core design goal: improving stability during turning, which is where many standard walking frames are less effective.
